How to Write a Hook That Grabs Attention
A hook is the first sentence or two of a video, post or article — the part that decides whether someone keeps watching or scrolls past. Good hooks follow a handful of repeatable patterns, and once you know them, writing one gets much easier.
Why the first line matters
On most platforms, people decide within a few seconds whether to keep watching or reading. Your hook is a promise: it tells the audience what they'll get and why it's worth their time.
A weak hook like "In this video I'll talk about budgeting" gives no reason to stay. A strong one like "I saved $5,000 in six months without giving up coffee" creates curiosity instantly.
The five hook patterns that work
Most effective hooks use one of these patterns:
- Curiosity gap: "Nobody talks about this part of moving abroad…"
- Bold claim: "You've been cooking rice wrong your whole life."
- Question: "What would you do with an extra hour every day?"
- Number or result: "3 habits that doubled my reading speed."
- Story opener: "Two years ago I couldn't run a single kilometer."
Match the hook to the platform
A YouTube hook can run a full sentence or two because viewers expect a spoken intro. A social media caption hook needs to land in the first line, before the "more" cutoff. An article hook should set up the problem the rest of the piece solves.
How to use the generator
Type your topic — for example "how to wake up early without an alarm" — and press Generate hooks. You'll get a list of opening lines in different styles. Hover any hook and click the copy icon to grab it.
Treat the results as starting points: pick the one closest to your voice, then tweak the wording so it sounds like you.
Common mistakes to avoid
Three things weaken almost any hook:
- Clickbait the content can't deliver — it erodes trust fast
- Starting with your name or channel intro instead of the value
- Being vague — "tips for success" hooks nobody; "how I got my first 100 customers" does
