Markdown Cheat Sheet for Beginners

Markdown is a simple way to format text using ordinary characters — a # for a heading, **stars** for bold. It is used in README files, notes apps, chat tools and many blogs.

Headings and emphasis

Start a line with # for a main heading, ## for a subheading, and so on up to ######.

Wrap words in **double stars** for bold, *single stars* for italic, and ~~tildes~~ for strikethrough.

Lists

Start lines with - or * for bullet points, or 1. 2. 3. for a numbered list. Indent by two or four spaces to nest a list inside another.

Links, images and code

The common patterns:

  • Link: [link text](https://example.com)
  • Image: ![alt text](image-url.png)
  • Inline code: wrap text in `backticks`
  • Code block: put ``` on the line before and after the code

Quotes and tables

Start a line with > to make a quote.

Tables use pipes and dashes: | Name | Age | on the first line, |---|---| on the second, then one row per line.

Try it live

Type Markdown on the left of the preview tool and see the formatted result instantly. For safety, the preview strips out any scripts or hidden code before showing it, and nothing you type is uploaded.
