What Is a Palindrome? Words, Phrases, and Number Examples
A palindrome reads the same forward and backward. Level, racecar, and 1221 are examples. For phrases, people commonly ignore spaces, punctuation, and letter case: A man, a plan, a canal: Panama becomes amanaplanacanalpanama.
Compare from the outside inward
Take level. The first and last letters are both l; the next pair are both e; the middle v needs no partner. Every pair matches, so the word is a palindrome. Hello fails immediately because h and o differ.
An even-length example has no single middle character. In noon, n matches n and o matches o. Both odd and even lengths can qualify; matching pairs are what matters.
Why a phrase can count despite its punctuation
A phrase such as Never odd or even only matches after spaces are removed and letters are made lowercase: neveroddoreven. If you reverse the original text with its spaces intact, the character sequence is not identical.
State the comparison rule before checking an example. A strict character comparison and a letters-only comparison can produce different answers. This checker ignores punctuation and spacing rather than testing the original text exactly as written.
Number examples and leading zeros
121, 1221, and 12321 are palindromes when treated as digit strings. 1231 is not: the outer 1s match, but the inner 2 and 3 do not. Arithmetic is unnecessary; simply compare the digits.
Representation matters. The text 010 is a palindrome, while the number 10 is not written symmetrically. This checker treats your entry as text and keeps its digits, so it preserves a leading zero rather than interpreting it as a numeric value.
The checker's language limitation
This tool lowercases input and keeps only English letters a–z and digits 0–9. Accented letters, other writing systems, emoji, punctuation, and spaces are removed from the comparison. It is not a general multilingual palindrome test.
The Compared as line shows exactly what was checked. Review that line if your input contains an accent or a non-English character. If nothing remains after cleaning, the tool does not show a palindrome verdict.
Try your own word or phrase
Enter level to see a match, then change it to lever to see a non-match. Try Never odd or even and check the cleaned version below the verdict. Results update as you type; no separate check button is needed.
A palindrome is different from an anagram, which rearranges letters, and from a reversed sentence, which changes their order. The defining feature is that reversing the chosen sequence leaves it unchanged.
