What Is Lorem Ipsum and Why Designers Use It

Where it comes from

The text is a scrambled passage from "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil), written by the Roman philosopher Cicero in 45 BC. A 16th-century printer jumbled the words to make a type-specimen book, and it stuck.

So it is real Latin, but deliberately garbled — it does not translate into a coherent sentence.

Why not just use real text?

Readable content hijacks attention. Show a client a homepage mockup with real sentences and they will proofread the words instead of judging the design. Lorem ipsum has the rhythm and word lengths of English without any meaning to argue about.

It also spreads letters and word lengths naturally, which gives a more honest impression of how a font and layout will behave than typing "text text text".

When to use it — and when not to

Lorem ipsum is right for some jobs and wrong for others:

• Good: wireframes, mockups, font and spacing tests, print layouts
• Good: testing how a design handles long and short content
• Bad: anything users will see — replace it before launch
• Bad: testing real reading experiences, forms, or error messages

How much do you need?

A rough guide: one paragraph is about 40–70 words, a short blog post preview is 2–3 paragraphs, and a full article mockup is 8–12. Generate a little more than you think you need so you can test overflow and truncation.

Generate placeholder text

The Lorem Ipsum Generator creates 1 to 20 paragraphs of classic placeholder text instantly. Pick the number of paragraphs, copy the result, and paste it into your design. It runs entirely in your browser.
