YouTube Titles That Get Clicks: Formulas, Length Limits, and Mistakes to Avoid
On YouTube, your title and thumbnail do the selling. A great video with a weak title gets buried; a good video with a great title gets watched. Here's what actually works.
The length limit that matters
YouTube allows 100 characters, but titles get cut off in search results and suggested feeds at around 60–70 characters. Put the important words first. "I Tried Waking Up at 5 AM for 30 Days — Here's What Happened" works; "Here's What Happened When I Tried Waking Up at 5 AM for 30 Days" buries the topic at the end where it gets truncated.
Formulas that consistently work
Most high-performing titles are variations on a handful of patterns:
- How-to with a payoff: "How to Edit Video Faster (Without Expensive Software)"
- Numbered list: "7 Mistakes New Photographers Make"
- Challenge or experiment: "I Only Ate Gas Station Food for a Week"
- Vs. comparison: "iPhone vs. $3,000 Camera — Can You Tell?"
- Curiosity gap: "The Real Reason Planes Don't Fly Over Antarctica"
- Negative angle: "Why Nobody Buys the Middle Option"
Curiosity vs. clickbait
A good title creates a question the viewer wants answered; clickbait creates a question the video doesn't answer. The difference matters because YouTube measures watch time and satisfaction. Clickbait gets the click, then viewers leave in 30 seconds — and the algorithm learns to stop recommending you.
The test: can your video actually deliver on the title's promise in the first minute? If yes, it's curiosity. If the title oversells, rewrite it.
Include the search term
YouTube is the world's second-largest search engine. If people search "how to fix a leaky faucet," a title containing those words can rank in both YouTube and Google search. Say the topic plainly somewhere in the title, even if you dress it up around the edges.
Test and iterate
YouTube Studio's "Test & Compare" feature lets you try multiple titles and thumbnails against each other. Generate several candidates, pick your favorite two or three, and let real viewers vote with their clicks. Even experienced creators are surprised by which title wins.
